10 Types of Social Media personalities – Which one is yours?
Hello, our fellow social media addicts! We’ve all been on social media for more than five years on average, and we all interact with various kinds of personalities. How we interact with them — and what we get in return — is what keeps things interesting.
But this stuff is super important to a marketer. Judging a personality accurately and telling a story that engages and enlightens the digital being observing your brand is as crucial as washing your hands after peeing. P.S.: YES, it’s important!
Over the past few years, we’ve observed behavior patterns of different “digital beings.” Putting out the right message to the right audience can make or break your brand. So, on a semi-humorous note, we share with you our ultra-comprehensive list of the personalities you may encounter in the digital world.
1. The Social Buff
These are the social bees of the digital world. Their profile is complete, their display picture is contagiously happy, and they’re borderline spammers.
They’re everywhere — liking random sponsored ads, chatting in groups, following pages, tweeting, Instagramming, answering on Quora, and more.
Because they’re highly accessible and influential, they’re a key focus group. When one of them shares your post or recommends your product, it can go a long, long way.
2. The Unsociaл-Social Being
Reserved is the word. They secretly follow meme trends and quietly laugh at the funny ones. These are the socially reluctant digital beings who don’t want to be disturbed.
They rarely use selfies as profile pictures and often come off as stalkers because they deeply analyze every profile before engaging.
They’re hard to impress. Only if your creative work, ad, meme, or GIF is truly outstanding will they hit “like.” If they share your content — congratulations, marketer, you’ve made it.
3. The Social Nurturer
They don’t notice the difference between Sunday and Monday — unless they see #MondayMotivation trending. These people live to motivate others.
They’ll ask you questions, get into your head, and then flood you with motivational videos, quotes, and blogs.
Warm-hearted, popular, and selfless, they’re always nurturing potential in others. They’re YouTube addicts and often run Facebook pages for social causes.
As a brand, align with social good. As a marketer, use the Social Nurturer to amplify your give-back message. And hey — all marketers should strive to be nurturers first.
4. The Social Snorlaxes
Super relaxed, they never fold their blanket because sleep is sacred — and they’re the extremists of that sect. They’ll schedule a month’s worth of posts and then vanish.
It’s because of them we learned that inconsistent posting hurts your social presence.
They have fake accounts, multiple profiles, and a massive stock of chips. Meme creators often fall into this category.
Watch out: Online response management must be on point. These users will call out anything that conflicts with their worldview — and comment some mean things.
5. The Social Geek
They use a fictional character from a game, movie, or comic as their cover photo — classic tell. Otherwise, look for long, articulate comments on random posts.
They believe they can change the world through their intelligent social media commentary (though they don’t truly grasp scientific concepts). They know just enough to sound smart.
They love tech, are digitally active, fiercely opinionated, and usually friendless — because they approach everything with cold logic.
Marketers: Your content must be witty, energetic, creative, and scientifically accurate to win them over. Basically, it has to be perfect.
6. The Social Doer
These beings can school anyone on integrating social media with real-world campaigns. They’re the Doers — the real slim shady — and they don’t need to stand up to prove it.
Adaptability is their superpower. They’re the first to catch new digital trends and create Facebook events like pros.
Impatient risk-takers with zero respect for rules — essential when you’ve got stuff to get done.
Guess what? They’re usually marketers. So… awkward. Anyway — keep doing your thing.
7. The Social Loiterer
They’re online — but not doing much. Just sitting there, occasionally liking stuff. Online shopping is their version of chilling.
They know your plans, check-ins, and who you’re with — and why. :O
On the bright side, they read a lot — every blog, article, and thread — and may evolve into one of the other types on this list.
Marketers: Reach them through boosted posts and celebrity collaborations.
8. The Social Inspirer
Intense. They work hard and play harder. You’ll never catch them meddling in others’ lives — instead, they inspire subliminally.
They live from the heart, rarely overthink, and are always striving to be the best. They don’t need motivation — they *are* the motivation.
Marketers: Don’t market *to* them — engage *with* them. Ask what they think. They’re not just audiences; they’re idea machines with insights you’ve never considered.
9. The Social Ranter
They know a lot — not from reading, but from meeting people. They have explosive energy when expressing their thoughts.
If opinions were gemstones, their brain would be diamond-studded. Their views are concrete, tough to handle, and highly influential.
They have strong followings and high emotional intelligence — making them great marketers themselves.
If you can win over one of these digital beings, half your marketing job is done. Your story will spread like wildfire.
10. The Social Visionary
ATTENTION all wannabe Steve Jobs! These are the gifted ones — or at least, they’ve spent years focusing on what truly matters to them.
You’ll find them on Quora and Reddit, dropping long, insightful comments. Rarely on Twitter — too shallow for their depth.
Their deep work makes them seem like geniuses, but really, they’re just passionate, hard-working individuals who found their calling early.
Marketers often promote products *made by* them. But yes — have a conversation. Their industry insights are gold.
